Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Arizona, U.S.A.
Following the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, confusion about multiple conflicting state abortion bans caused intermittent abortion clinic closures through the end of the year. On December 30, the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled to harmonize the pre-statehood total ban with Arizona’s contemporary laws that limit access to abortion care. Currently, doctors can provide abortion to patients who are less than 15 weeks pregnant, in accordance with a ban that passed in March 2022.
In 2021, the Arizona State Legislature passed a budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year that included $1.5 million dollars set aside for a “family health pilot program,” which diverts taxpayer dollars to crisis pregnancy centers. As of January 2023, there are at least 32 crisis pregnancy centers, 5 independent abortion clinics, and 4 Planned Parenthood health centers that provide abortion care in Arizona. Abortion care past 15 weeks of gestation is available in neighboring states: California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado.
